Queen Elvis - EP Review - Little World

A fine debut EP
To Lull : to cause to sleep or rest;. soothe or calm. On first listening to the Little World EP by Queen Elvis, one could easily be lulled; their songs sway you from side to side with beautiful arrangements along with Caroline Kelly's vocals which are profoundly sweet with a solidity that is undeniable. It is on really listening to the lyrics that one realizes that there is so much more to what is "Queen Elvis" than their soothing sounds; this band is very much about our times with its travails and challenges- they make us think. The opening track, Rockabye Baby, is about love, pure and simple, or more to the point, lack of love and the effect that can have on a person and their fate in life as a result. This is followed by "Easy" which, in my opinion, epitomizes what Queen Elvis is about. The line "Its a little bit easy to back down from your beliefs" says it all for me. In "Round and Round", the political nature of the band comes to the fore, speaking of the imbalances of today's society, with the disturbing background sound effects of war mixed cleverly into the song's mix. While I have focussed on the lyrics on this fine debut EP, the musicality of Queen Elvis equally deserves a mention. The string arrangements of cello and violin are given plenty of space and provide a solid foundation for Colin Stanley's guitar playing which is both intelligent and emotive. Geoff Ward's saxophone playing has a gutsy blues vibe. Queen Elvis' music has a maturity that commands respect and respect it I do.
